"The Two-Headed Whale": Life, loss and the tangled legacy of whaling in the Antarctic.
In 2016, Sandy sailed from Montevideo on a tall-ship voyage following in the footsteps of the great explorer Shackleton. On landing at South Georgia, her pristine image of Antarctica was shattered by the remains of the industrial-scale whaling stations that now litter the island. It is estimated that two-million whales were killed in Antarctic waters alone, and mostly used for fertiliser and pet food.
At this in-person author event, Sandy will present photos from her voyage and archive images from the historical whaling expeditions of the mid-twentieth century, along with extracts from the book.
What can the history of Antarctic whaling teach us about the present-day climate and ecological emergency?
There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion, and to purchase the book for a discounted price.
This is an event hosted by local environmental charity Transition Stirling, and it's organized by the Stirling Reuse Hub, not your usual second hand shop: https://linktr.ee/stirlingreusehub. It is free entry, but donations are more than welcome.
For the potluck, feel free to bring your favourite vegan food to share; if you are not familiar with vegan cooking, there will be vegan and GF food available. Please book your spot in advance, to help us assess numbers.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
