In partnership with the Woodland Trust at Glen Finglas, outdoor educator and naturalist Lauren Lochrie of Herbal Homestead, will be taking participants on an immersive, arboreal journey to explore a handful of native trees and their uses across the seasons.
Glen Finglas Estate lies in the heart of Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and is part of The Great Trossachs Forest National Nature reserve. With an emphasis on conservation for the benefit of people, wildlife and the environment, the trust have planted, protected and restored this incredible landscape over a quarter of a century. The Estate has something for everyone and these seasonal workshops which celebrate our native trees may be just for you as Lauren will help you better connect with nature and the nature of yourself.
The best way to really get to know any tree is to observe and work with it as it changes throughout the year, and by making room for deeper insights, you will simply start to see the forest in a new way. As we slow down to connect with seasonal rhythms and abundances, we too can learn to find a better rhythm within ourselves, appreciating what may have been overlooked before.
Depending on the time of year and tree focus, participants will learn about and prepare different remedies, crafts, and food stuffs from sap, leaves, catkins, roots, twigs, flowers, berries, bark, cones and associated fungi.
Our Summer course focus is with the magical Rowan tree (Sorbus aucuparia).
These workshops can be attended as a one-off but learning and enjoyment will be enhanced if experienced as a four season continuum (booking on to the Spring, Autumn, & Winter courses too). Throughout the year we will take different routes, some of which will be uphill in parts, more information will be sent out before each course.
What to expect from these courses:
- Native tree identification and habitat cues
- Exploring traditional and modern uses of Birch, Rowan, Hawthorn & Scot's Pine
- Trying pre-prepared foraged nibbles, teas and remedies
- Harvesting and working with different tree parts to prepare drinks, herbal remedies, tinder, ointments and other useful & decorative items depending on seasonal abundance
