Level: Intermediate
Join Silversmith Jill Leventon for a weekend of corrugation for enamels, combining structural and textural metalworking with colourful enamelling. Corrugation, or micro-folding involves creating small undulations or corrugations in thin sheets of metal. As well as a decorative effect, the process creates strength in thin sheets of metal, making it an economical way to create sculptural and larger-scale pieces of jewellery. Using simple hand tools and a corrugating roller you will learn to add pleats, folds, and smocking to your designs and how to create lightweight hollow bead forms. This workshop is suitable for those with some previous workshop experience who would like to add to their repertoire of jewellery-making skills. Enamel experience is not required.
Day 1 – There will be lots of practical demonstrations on how to achieve different corrugation effects, as well as explanations of suitable types and thicknesses of metal. There will be plenty of time to experiment with the different effects and shapes you can achieve by further manipulating the corrugated metal using hand tools, press forming and using the rolling mill. By the end of the day, you will have a selection of suitable copper forms to enamel on day two.
Day 2 – On Sunday you will explore the effects of both transparent and opaque enamels when layered with different corrugated textures and forms.
Your Tutor: Jill Leventon has her workshop in Shrewsbury where she teaches enamelling and various metal-forming techniques. She came to corrugation through enamelling, and now combines the two techniques, along with fold forming and using the hydraulic press. She teaches both enamelling and corrugation at workshops around the country.
