In the spirit of sustainability we’ll incorporate reclaimed materials such as bone china and slate, as well as high-quality sheet glass for a colourful and high-quality finish. We encourage you to bring along any bone china that you’d like to incorporate into your design – Rhona will be able to advise you about its suitability for outdoors.

Choose your own motif to work from, it can be anything that inspires you … a house number, a favourite flower, an initial or something else – you choose! The workshop is suitable for both beginners and intermediate levels. So whether you’re brand new to mosaics, or if you’ve been to a previous workshop and would like to further develop your skills, you’re very welcome!

You’ll learn about the materials suitable for exterior mosaics plus how to use tools to cut mosaics and glass, and you’ll grout your mosaic if you have enough time – otherwise, you can watch how it’s done and complete it at home. It’s a relaxed atmosphere where, not only will you develop or hone your mosaic skills, but you’ll also have an enjoyable day out!

This is also a great workshop for team building and private parties – if you’d like to book for a private event, contact Rhona at rhonaduffy@mosaicandglass.com

Important notes:

Course includes tuition, use of tools, materials, and tea/coffee/snacks.
Please bring your own lunch and utensils – or you can buy lunch at a nearby shop/snack bar.
All our workshops are suitable for over age 16s.
If the workshop you were looking at is fully booked, email rhonaduffy@mosaicandglass.com and we’ll add you to the waiting list. We will add extra dates to our most popular workshops too, so join our newsletter mailing list to be the first to know.
This workshop has a maximum of eight participants.
In case of insufficient registrations, the workshop will be cancelled and you’ll get a refund of your workshop fee. We do expect this workshop to run, however.
If you wish to cancel your place, a refund (minus bank charges) will only be possible if someone else takes your place.

About your tutor:

Rhona Duffy creates a contemporary take on the ancient art form of mosaic, while also appreciating the classical rules. She enjoys pushing the boundaries of the Roman technique opus sectile (using larger pieces of material to produce a pattern). Her work is inspired by art nouveau, picassiette, music and nature. She uses mixed media, including glass tiles, stained glass, marble, smalti and bone china. Rhona’s work is an escape from the challenges of life and the issues facing us in today’s world – it’s an antidote to bring joy to both herself, as she creates, and its viewers. She has an arts degree in English and philosophy, and a master’s degree in journalism. She launched the international magazine Mosaic & Glass in 2022. In addition, she volunteers at her son’s school, introducing him and his classmates to mosaic and glass. Rhona also teaches regularly in Central Scotland, including at Wider Access to School Project in Denny – a charity providing subsidised higher education to adult learners in the local community. Originally from Dublin, Rhona has lived in Scotland for over 30 years.

About Mosaic & Glass masterclasses and workshops:

Nestled in Falkirk in the heart of Scotland, this new space will open in early 2025. It will offer the perfect setting for mosaic and glass enthusiasts to immerse themselves in hands-on learning in a welcoming and well-equipped environment. Designed for comfort and creativity, the space will be thoughtfully arranged to accommodate both mosaic and glass creators, making it an ideal venue for both beginners and seasoned makers to learn from visiting tutors from across the world. The venue is located in Central Falkirk, with free on-street parking nearby. It’s a five-minute walk from Grahamston Station, which is 30 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow by train. It has train routes heading to the north of Scotland too. With plenty of accommodation options and eateries nearby, students can easily settle in for multi-day workshops, and its central location makes it a convenient gateway for exploring Scotland’s rich cultural and scenic attractions, turning every visit into both an educational and inspirational journey. Look out for pictures of the new space coming in early 2025. Plus keep an eye on our social media for progress updates!
