Beginners and improvers welcome
Dates: Thursdays, 6.30pm-9pm, starting on 20 March 2025 for six weeks (no classes will take place on 10 or 17 April, which are during the school holiday period). The final class will be on 8 May.
In this evening course, you’ll create a mixed-media artwork for your home or garden. We’ll incorporate a mix of new and reclaimed materials such as bone china, slate, mosaic tiles, stone, and glass. We encourage you to bring along any bone china that you’d like to incorporate into your design – Rhona will be able to advise you about its suitability for outdoors.
You’ll learn about the materials, suitability for exterior use, plus how to use tools to cut mosaics and glass, and you’ll grout your mosaic(s) during the final week. Rhona will also explain the classical rules of mosaic, and andamento – the way that tesserae (individual pieces of stone or glass used in a mosaic) are laid to create a visually appealing mosaic, and how it’s useful to know these rules and use some/all of them. She’ll also explain which rules she cherry picks for her own contemporary work. She’ll provide students with a printed guide to take home for future reference too.
You can choose to do a few smaller projects suggested by Rhona, if you’re a complete beginner. You might choose a series of small projects, or a larger project, like a mosaic panel – or perhaps one of each. If you prefer, you can choose your own design to work from, it can be anything that inspires you … a house number, a favourite flower, a house name, a spring wreath, an initial or something else – you choose!
The workshop is suitable for both beginners and intermediate levels. So whether you’re brand new to mosaics, or if you’ve been to a previous workshop and would like to further develop your skills, or do a more intensive project, you’re very welcome. We’ll liaise in advance about your ideas for what you’d like to create. In the photos, you can see a selection of Rhona’s work, plus some pictures of her students with their creations.
Important notes:
Course includes tuition, use of tools, materials, and tea/coffee/snacks.
All our workshops are suitable for over age 16s.
If the workshop you were looking at is fully booked, email rhonaduffy@mosaicandglass.com and we’ll add you to the waiting list. We will add extra dates to our most popular workshops too, so join our newsletter mailing list to be the first to know.
This evening course has a maximum of eight participants.
In case of insufficient registrations, it will be cancelled and you’ll get a refund of your fee.
If you wish to cancel your place, a refund (minus bank charges) will only be possible if someone else takes your place.
About your tutor
Rhona Duffy creates a contemporary take on the ancient art form of mosaic, while also appreciating the classical rules. She enjoys pushing the boundaries of the Roman technique opus sectile (using larger pieces of material to produce a pattern). Her work is inspired by art nouveau, picassiette, music and nature. She uses mixed media, including glass tiles, stained glass, marble, smalti and bone china. Rhona’s work is an escape from the challenges of life and the issues facing us in today’s world – it’s an antidote to bring joy to both herself, as she creates, and its viewers. She has an arts degree in English and philosophy, and a master’s degree in journalism. She launched the international magazine Mosaic & Glass in 2022. In addition, she volunteers at her son’s school, introducing him and his classmates to mosaic and glass. Rhona also teaches regularly in Central Scotland, including at Wider Access to School Project in Denny – a charity providing subsidised higher education to adult learners in the local community. Originally from Dublin, Rhona has lived in Scotland for over 30 years.
