Are you looking to sharpen up your mosaic and glass cutting skills? In this workshop, Rhona Duffy and Una Galbraith will help you improve your mosaic and glass cutting skills. This will include an overview of the tools they use in their work, plus you’ll get to try them out under their guidance.
The materials we’ll be using include vitreous tiles, porcelain tiles, marble/stone, bone china, smalti, and glass. The tools we’ll be using include: wheeled nippers (various kinds depending on the materials), tile nippers, and hammer and hardie (for mosaic), and glass cutters, running pliers, grozing pliers (for glass).
If you’re more interested in learning about one area than the other, you’re welcome to focus on that. We’ll be using scrap bone china pieces / practice glass – this isn’t a workshop where you’ll leave with a finished piece. But you’re welcome to bring your own materials if you’d like helping with cutting them for a project you’re working on.
Important notes:
All our workshops are suitable for over age 16s.
If the workshop you were looking at is fully booked, email rhonaduffy@mosaicandglass.com and we’ll add you to the waiting list. We will add extra dates to our most popular workshops too, so join our newsletter mailing list to be the first to know.
This workshop has a maximum of eight participants.
In case of insufficient registrations, the workshop will be cancelled and you’ll get a refund of your workshop fee.
If you wish to cancel your place, a refund (minus bank charges) will only be possible if someone else takes your place.
About your tutors:
Rhona Duffy creates a contemporary take on the ancient art form of mosaic, while also appreciating the classical rules. She enjoys pushing the boundaries of the Roman technique opus sectile (using larger pieces of material to produce a pattern). Her work is inspired by art nouveau, picassiette, music and nature. She uses mixed media, including glass tiles, stained glass, marble, smalti and bone china. Rhona’s work is an escape from the challenges of life and the issues facing us in today’s world – it’s an antidote to bring joy to both herself, as she creates, and its viewers. She has an arts degree in English and philosophy, and a master’s degree in journalism. She launched the international magazine Mosaic & Glass in 2022. In addition, she volunteers at her son’s school, introducing him and his classmates to mosaic and glass. Rhona also teaches regularly in Central Scotland, including at Wider Access to School Project in Denny – a charity providing subsidised higher education to adult learners in the local community. Originally from Dublin, Rhona has lived in Scotland for over 30 years.
Una Galbraith is a glass artist based in Central Scotland. Her journey as a glass maker began with a night class at The Glasgow School of Art in 2017 and she’s now a professional member of the Scottish Glass Society and Contemporary Glass Society. She explores subjects concerning psychology, nature and conservation through kiln-formed glass. In 2023, Una received a VACMA award to develop a collection inspired by the peat and bog ecosystem of Caithness and the wider flowlands landscape, which was exhibited at Artisan& in October 2023. She’s a regular exhibitor at Artisan& in Aberfeldy and is one of seven artists represented by Artisan& at Edinburgh Art Fair 2024.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
