This comprehensive masterclass offers an inspiring hands-on experience where you’ll create unique, eco-friendly fabrics while exploring sustainable crafting methods. Whether you’re an experienced maker or new to textile design, this workshop equips you with practical skills and creative inspiration.
Over the course of three days, you’ll dive into the alchemy of natural dyeing, learning how to mix plant-based dyes from scratch. Using Madder and Weld, you’ll create stunning red and yellow hues, while experimenting with the transformative properties of Iron and Gallnut inks. Sarah will guide you through each step, ensuring you feel confident working from recipes to achieve consistent and beautiful results.
The workshop also introduces the intricate art of block printing. You’ll explore the potential of ready-made natural inks while experimenting with woodblocks to create striking patterns. Sarah will teach you how to carve your own custom lino blocks, enabling you to craft intricate repeat prints and personalized designs on fabric. Throughout the process, you’ll also learn essential design principles to create harmonious and visually engaging patterns.
As the course progresses, you’ll combine these skills to design and create a ½ meter of finished fabric, perfect for use in visible mending, patchwork quilting, bookbinding, or other craft projects. To complete the experience, you’ll transform your hand-dyed and printed fabric into a bespoke envelope cushion, a beautiful keepsake made entirely by you.
This workshop not only provides a rich understanding of sustainable textile techniques but also offers a relaxing and supportive environment to spark your creativity. All materials, tools, and natural dyeing supplies are included, and you’ll receive a resource pack with detailed recipes and tips to continue experimenting at home.
Tea, coffee and treats are provided but please bring your own lunch. All our workshops are suitable for participants of age 16 or over.
