Oscar Edelstein from Argentina plays his “un-classic” piano accompanied by tapes and texts, with vocals and video made by Welsh multimedia artist Deborah Claire Procter.
Edelstein is known for music that intertwines the popular, classical and contemporary – making him compelling, original, and often considered as leading the avant-garde from Latin America.
“Taking inspiration from myriad genres, the composer-cum-director-cum-pianist is one of the most innovative musicians around.” Sophie Hern, Metro Cardiff
“The pianist advances in search of the composer – due the originality of the approach and the attractiveness of the result, it is one of Edelstein’s great discoveries. Pianist and composer merge in a language that goes beyond matter to become gesture and instance. “For years I have been working with harmonic-timbral-spatial formulas that have to do with the old, beloved and sometimes misused ‘extended techniques’. In this way I find new landscapes which I never travel through like a tourist, but enjoy as if being part of an adventure,” explains Edelstein. In this plan is what he calls ‘curvature of the piano timbre’, which has to do with different rhythmic division for each finger of the hand, and which also use different force and projection of attack on the keys. “This makes it possible to work on the rhythmic division in a very complex and irregular state, which leads to the writing. In that place my aim is to bring these techniques to an almost intuitive incorporation. When I play I pass this writing through the body until it functions as a system that I can handle without thinking,” he explains.
