The Festival of Volunteering was developed by Volunteer Scotland in 2016. The idea behind the Festival was to increase volunteer participation across Scotland.
Stirling would be the first to develop the concept with the support of Stirling Council and Stirlingshire Voluntary Enterprise, with an aim to increase volunteer participation in Stirling up to 50% over the next 5 years.
Volunteer Scotland teamed with a range of local organisations to develop what a Festival of Volunteering would look it. In September 2017, the first Festival of Volunteering took place with 8 events over 6 days. More than 70 local organisations were involved, and over 1500 people attended the various events throughout the week.
Building on the success of 2017’s Festival we wanted 2018 to be even bigger and better. And it was! We hosted 7 events in 7 days with more than 2750 people involved and with the support of almost 100 local organisations.
In 2018, The Festival of Volunteering also included an application for Stirling to become European Volunteering Capital 2020 but were unfortunately unsuccessful, missing out to Padua, Italy. The loss hasn’t dampened our determination, our aim is still to increase volunteer participation throughout Scotland using the Festival model.
Stirling Council revealed an updated events programme for its popular annual Winter Festival in light of latest Scottish Government advice and Covid-19 regulations.
