Stirling’s Hogmanay celebrations will go digital this year, offering online entertainment and a midnight fireworks display to mark the start of the New Year.
Hogmanay
Stirling Council revealed an updated events programme for its popular annual Winter Festival in light of latest Scottish Government advice and Covid-19 regulations.
Unfortunately this has included taking the difficult decision to scale back events that involve mass gatherings of people in order to protect the health of the public and traders.
Stirling's Hogmanay in your home
Instead, Stirling’s Hogmanay will be beamed directly into people’s homes, with entertainment from venues around the city.
The current restrictions on mass gatherings means Stirling’s Hogmanay on the Castle Esplanade will not take place this year.
However, the Council’s annual firework display will still bring in the New Year with a bang, offering a unique and special display reflecting on the challenging year just gone in and looking ahead to more positive times in 2021.
Lighting up the sky directly from the National Wallace Monument, the showcase will allow residents from across Stirling to view the fireworks from the safety of their own homes.
Christmas lights still set to sparkle
Stirling will still be full of festive spirit and local shops are gearing up for a ‘Shop Local’ focus this year. The Christmas Lights will be switched on over the weekend of 14/15th of November, bringing their usual sparkle and cheer to the city centre.
Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no outdoor mass public event on King Street or reindeer parade.
Although this year’s Halloween parade is not being held, there will still be some disturbing digital delights available here to mark the occasion.
A different way to celebrate
Convenor Chris Kane said: “This year we are offering a different way to celebrate Hogmanay, providing a series of digital events for people to enjoy from their own homes.
“Our fireworks display will come with an added dimension that will reflect on the challenges we have all faced this year, while looking ahead with hope to a brighter future next year.
“The most important thing at the moment is to keep people safe, and Stirling’s Winter Festival will be ready to welcome visitors old and new again in 2021.”
Visit the city centre this festive season
Vice Convener, Councillor Scott Farmer, said: “We want to be clear that Christmas in Stirling isn’t cancelled and that our businesses will still be open to offer their usual festive cheer for residents and visitors alike to take advantage of.
“We hope that the Christmas lights will encourage everyone to visit the city centre and support our local businesses in a Covid secure manner through the Christmas period.”
Further announcements with details of the scheduled events will be made in the coming weeks.
