Local celebs including recording artist and actor Erin Gavin, actor Reece Donnelly & presenter Atta Yaqub joined runners with a cause at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Bandstand & Amphitheatre to officially mark the countdown to Scotland’s greatest running event, the 2024 AJ Bell Great Scottish Run on Sunday 6th October.
Set to be the biggest run weekend ever, inspiring runners with a personal cause took the opportunity to talk about their reasons for running as part of the Great Scottish Run ‘Power of Running’ series which has 4 main strands: mental health, community, fundraising, and physical fitness:
Vegan Runners: marking its 20th anniversary and running in animal costumes, they promote a healthy, performance-enhancing, cruelty-free lifestyle to runners and encourage vegans to take up running.
Andrew Tomlinson: hemiplegic cerebral palsy, he aims to make running road races more accessible for people with disabilities and is currently applying to be recognised as the fastest marathon runner with Hemiplegia with a marathon time of 3hr 45 in Boston and 3 hrs 58 in Chicago.
Claire Barker: running for cystic fibrosis trust, her husband who has this condition fortunately qualified for new drug Orkambi and it’s completely saved his life and she wants to raise awareness of this ground breaking drug and the difference it’s made to his life.
Henrietta Kurusa: running for Venture Scotland; a charity who work hard to empower young adults who face challenges in their lives through outdoor based development programmes.
Outlier Run Club: they promote personal wellbeing and development through sport and are committed to supporting those less fortunate within the local community and Greater Glasgow are – they have 100 members running to raise money for charities Scottish Sports Futures; Kindness Homeless Street Team & Refuweegee.
Held over the weekend of Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October, this incredible weekend of running offers a 10k and half marathon route taking runners on a tour in and around the fantastic city of Glasgow, cheered on by bagpipers from Clanadonia marking every mile, before finishing on Glasgow Green. There’s also something for the kids, with a super charged sprint for Toddlers, Minis and Juniors and a fun Mascot race on the 5th.
