Stirling – March 2025
The Stirling Photography Festival is proud to announce the creation of a special commemorative photography book: Stirling 900... A Celebration of the People and the Place. This book will capture the spirit of this historic year through a curated collection of photographs submitted by the public.
Curated and produced by members of the Stirling 900 Steering Committee and volunteers from the festival’s creative team, this book will serve as a lasting tribute to Stirling’s vibrant community. Proudly sponsored by Stirling District Tourism, the book will also feature a Foreword by the Lord Provost of Stirling, underscoring the significance of this anniversary for the county and its people.
Call for Submissions:
The call for public submissions will officially open in March 2025, inviting residents and visitors alike to contribute their best photographs taken throughout our anniversary year. From everyday moments and community gatherings, to iconic locations and historic events, the published collection will help tell the story of Stirling’s people and places throughout this commemorative year.
The final moments of the year-long festivities, including the closing celebrations at the end of March, will also be included in this visual archive. Selected images will be carefully curated to create a compelling narrative that reflects the diversity, heritage, and vibrancy of Stirling and its surrounding areas.

Janie Meikle Bland, from Stirling Photography Festival says of this project:
“The festival team are delighted to contribute to the Stirling 900 legacy by creating this unique book of photographs. Over the past seven years, as part of our annual festival, we have produced a series of wonderful photobooks with contributions from people the world over. The festival team will use our skills and expertise to produce this unique, curated collection to celebrate all that is Stirling in its 900th year – we want to include images from the length and breadth of Stirling county – your photographs of community gatherings, sporting celebrations, iconic landscapes, people, nature and our magnificent built heritage. Selected images will make up a collection which will showcase the best of Stirling through the eyes of the people.”
A Lasting Tribute to Stirling 900
Following the submission phase, the content will be curated in April, with the final book set for completion by the end of May. This Stirling 900... A Celebration of the People and the Place book will serve as a cherished record of this extraordinary year.
Stirling Lord Provost, Elaine Watterson, said: “Many inspiring stories have come from Stirling 900 and I’m delighted the Stirling Photography Festival, in collaboration with Stirling District Tourism, are curating images to showcase it all in this special commemorative book.
“Over the last 12 months, Stirling has honoured its past and also championed our place in the 21st century through events, exhibitions and public celebrations.
“We’ve hosted our first Stirling Pride, our biggest ever Walking of the Marches, the Summer Sessions and Science Festival. In the process, we have shone a spotlight on our musicians and artists, our children and their achievements.
“We still have more to come with our spectacular parade, including 900 musicians marching from Stirling Castle, over Stirling Bridge to the Rugby Club, taking place on Saturday March 29 – and a cultural celebration at the castle 24 hours before, open to all residents.
“I can’t wait to see the images submitted by members of the public and curated by the Stirling Photography Festival. I know the Stirling 900 Commemorative Photography Book will remind us of a wonderful 12 months for many, many years to come.”
The Stirling Photography Festival team is delighted to be working in partnership with Stirling District Tourism to bring this community-driven project to life. With the enthusiastic participation of the public, this initiative will create a lasting visual archive that embodies the soul of Stirlingshire.
Dr David Mitchell, Trustee of Stirling District Tourism and contributor to the festival over the years says:
“Stirling District Tourism is delighted to sponsor this wonderful publication. As a Stirling charity our mission is to support the stewardship of our heritage and encourage people to engage with it.
Some of the earliest photographs taken in Scotland were of Stirling as Henry Fox Talbot, the inventor of what we know as photography today, travelled to capture calotypes of Loch Katrine and Doune Castle in 1844. John Muir Wood took the first image of the city shortly after - looking down Broad Street with a young man leaning against what is now Herman’s restaurant. The view has changed very little.
Since then, millions of photographs have been taken of our town and its people. They connect us to our past, they remind us of people, places and who we once were. Photographs and books last for lifetimes and this book will be a lasting record of Stirling as it is now for the future.”
How to Participate:
Photographers of all levels of experience are encouraged to submit their images for consideration. Whether capturing a candid street scene, a family celebration, a community event, or an iconic Stirlingshire landmark, submissions will create a unique storytelling project.
